How Section 179 Works for Business Vehicles

Overview

Section 179 is a U.S. tax incentive that may allow businesses to deduct all or part of the purchase price of qualifying vehicles placed in service during the tax year. When a vehicle’s GVWR is above 6,000 lbs, it is treated differently than most passenger cars under depreciation rules, which may enable larger first-year deductions when used primarily for business.

What “placed in service” means

The vehicle isn’t just purchased—it’s ready and available for business use by December 31. For many businesses, that means the vehicle is delivered, titled/registered, insured, and in your possession.

Business-use requirement

The vehicle generally needs to be used for business more than 50% of the time. Keep a mileage log or other records that clearly support your business usage.

Documentation Checklist

  • Signed buyer’s order or bill of sale
  • Proof of delivery and date placed in service
  • Title/registration and insurance documentation
  • Business-use mileage log or telematics reports
  • Entity information (LLC/Corp/DBA) and EIN (if applicable)
  • Talk with your tax professional about IRS Form 4562

Timeline to Maximize the Benefit

  1. Choose your qualifying model and trim (see list above).
  2. Secure pricing and financing or leasing approvals.
  3. Take delivery and place the vehicle in service by Dec 31.
  4. Keep records of business use and delivery date.
  5. Discuss your deduction strategy with your tax advisor.
